
Lighting

- Keep exterior lights on at night, or use motion
lights.
- Replace burned out bulbs immediately.
Landscaping/Exterior

- Keep bushes, trees, and plants around home neatly
trimmed so they do not block windows or provide a place for people to hide.
- Make sure address numbers on house or address sign in
yard is clearly visible from road to help in a quick response by law
enforcement/ emergency personnel.
Doors and Windows

- All exterior doors should be closed and locked.
People are often looking for the easy target and may pass up secured
locations for unlocked doors.
- All exterior doors should be made of steel or
solid-core.
- All exterior doors should have a dead bolt locks with
at least a 1” throw.
- Strike plates should be reinforced with 3”screws.
- Patio and sliding glass doors should have a rod or
piece of wood in the bottom track. Install a couple vertical screws in
upper track so door can slide but can not be lifted out.
- When feasible all windows should be kept shut and
locked at night or when you are gone.
- If warm weather requires sliding/ single or double
hung windows to be open, open them just enough so somebody can not crawl
through. Install locking pins or track locks so that the window can not be
opened any further.
Vacation
- Make sure all doors and windows are closed and locked
before you leave.
- Stop mail and newspaper deliveries while gone or have
somebody pick them up so that these items do not accumulate.
- Place timers on indoor lights, and set timers to turn
on radios or televisions at different times throughout the day.
- Have somebody cut your lawn or shovel snow so it
appears somebody is home.
- Do not close every blind or shade, leave some open so
the house appears normal.
- Park a car in the driveway.
- Have a person check your house throughout the week and
ask that they take the garbage out and return it to the garage the same time
you do.
- Place valuables such as jewelry in a safe or
preferably a safety deposit box if have one.
