Lighting

-
Exterior lights should
illuminate your entire property so law enforcement and citizens driving by
can see suspicious people and vehicles.
-
Lighting should eliminate
dark areas near buildings where people might hide.
-
Use lighting that will turn
on automatically when it gets dark.
-
Interior lighting allows
law enforcement and citizens to see in a building and discourages people
from entering for fear they will be noticed.
-
Replace burned out light
bulbs immediately.
-
Keep lighting consistent so
law enforcement recognizes when something is out of the ordinary.
Landscaping/ Exterior
- Trees and bushes should be trimmed so that they do not
provide hiding places for people and do not block the view of windows and
doors.
- Do not have anything on the exterior of a building
which would give people access to the roof.
- Make sure address numbers are clearly visible from the
road.
Doors and Windows
- Exterior doors should be made of steel or a strong
solid-core material.
- Exterior doors should have dead bolt locks which
extend one inch or more.
- Exterior doors should have a latch guard which
prevents prying near the lock mechanism.
- Outside hinges should have non-removable hinge pins.
- Windows should be closed and locked after hours.
- If sliding windows need to be open during warmer
weather, install locking pins so windows can’t be slid open and screen cut.
- Use burglar resistant glass when possible.
Alarm Systems

- Highly recommended.
- Display stickers on windows and doors showing that you
have an active alarm system.
- Make sure employees and contractors are familiar with
the alarm system procedure to cut down on false alarms.
Keys

- Be selective in who keys are issued to.
- Have a sign out system so keys are always accounted
for.
- Keep keys in one place and do not let them lie around
where anybody could grab them.
- Carve “do not duplicate” on all issued keys.
Safes

- Limit the number of people who have
access/combinations.
- Secure the safe to the floor if possible.
- Change the combination if somebody is terminated.
Identify Valuables
- Keep detailed lists of all valuables including brand
name, model number, serial number, color, and value. Engrave your own
number in an inconspicuous place on an item. This allows for a better
chance of recovery and return.
